Policymakers joined civil society and individuals on Thursday, 29 September to celebrate the heart on World Heart Day, the world’s main platform to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to promote heart healthy living.
Health messages were shared on social media to raise awareness about the most common cause of death worldwide, challenge friends and family to adopt heart healthy habits and remind policymakers to keep cardiovascular health high on the EU policy agenda!
In Europe, each year diseases of the heart and circulatory system (cardiovascular disease or CVD) cause more than 4 million deaths in Europe each year (49% of all deaths for women and 40% of all deaths for men). Overall they are estimated to cost the EU economy €196 billion a year. Yet, up to 80% of CVD can be prevented!
