MEP Heart Group Cocktail, 31 March 2009

The MEP Heart Group organised a cocktail reception in the European Parliament to thank all Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who have been supporting the Group and its initiatives for their continuous engagement in addressing heart health since the creation of the Group in 2007.

The Co-Chairs of the MEP Heart Group, Prof. Georgs Andrejevs and Dr. Adamos Adamou, congratulated the Group for establishing itself in the European Parliament as the largest informal group dealing with health with 84 supporting MEPs from across the political spectrum and from all 27 Member States. They also reminded the cocktail attendees of key achievements of the 2004-2009 European Parliament legislature in the area of cardiovascular health such as the EP Resolution on action to tackle cardiovascular disease (CVD) adopted almost unanimously on 12 July 2007.

In addition to the welcoming and closing speeches by the Co-Chairs, Susanne Logstrup, Director of the European Heart Network (EHN), invited all MEPs to remain committed to improving EU citizens’ cardiovascular health. Susanne also wished the attendees good luck in the upcoming European elections and in any of their future endeavours and concluded by calling upon MEP candidates to the elections to support the fight against CVD by:

  • Making the fight against CVD one of the priorities of their election campaign.
  • Referring to the burden of CVD and the need for an EU Strategy on CVD including a Council Recommendation and a Commission action plan in campaign materials or when speaking at public events.
  • Participating in the activities organised by national heart foundations in the context of the EU elections.

EHN was pleasantly surprised by the high turnout of MEPs at the cocktail where they had the opportunity to meet representatives of national heart foundations and cardiac societies from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
